Welcome to Coquitlam’s most unique Taekwondo school. We are a family-owned operation which aims to help bring Taekwondo to our modern era. At Team Performance Taekwondo Academy, our focus is to develop students into responsible, respectful citizens and athletes while utilizing the Olympic/Kukkiwon style of Taekwondo as our path to physical and mental balance. Our membership within BC Taekwondo Federation and World Taekwondo Federation of Canada allows students within our system to compete in tournaments sanctioned by the above governing bodies, in poomse (forms) and kyorugi (sparring), potentially reaching an Olympic level.
“Tyke-kwondo” Classes geared to energetic pre-schoolers. At these tender ages, Taekwondo is invaluable with setting a basic athletic and attentive foundation. Classes immerse your child in excercises that build basic balance, coordination, strength and focus, all while developing social skills with their teammates.
Mondays & Fridays: 4:30pm – 5:10pm
“Children” group classes build on the foundations of the Tyke program and take it further to more advanced coordination drills, technical awareness, self-defense and social behaviour. These classes, intended to be fun, fast-paced and un-intimidating, are proven to improve your child’s attention to school, homework and chores.
Beginners (White-Green): Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: 5:15pm – 6:00pm
Advanced (Blue-Black): Tuesdays,Thursdays: 4:45pm-5:30pm
“Kids” classes are usually designed with a heavier bias to agility, strength and conditioning. In these ages of increased awkwardness and social pressures, our Kids classes offer a space and time where students can feel free to be themselves and still learn to work hard for their achievements.
Beginner Belts (White-Green)
Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Tuesdays & Thursdays: 5:30pm-6:30pm
& Fridays: 6:00pm-7:00pm
Our Afterschool Taekwondo Program offers convenience, safety, fun and value for families with children under the age of 13. Qualified students will be picked up from their schools in our safe, passenger vehicles and driven back to Team Performance headquarters. Upon arrival, students are checked in with our Afterschool Program coordinator upstairs in our private, supervised Afterschool Program areas. Students will then have time to do any homework remaining from school, have a snack, enjoy the martial arts facilities with their fellow students, or even have some quiet time before their Taekwondo lessons if they choose to. Students will then be readied for their respective Taekwondo classes so that they are promptly on time. After their classes, parents are free to pick them up at a pre-determined time without worries of late charges or hassles.
Pickup services are currently available to the following schools within the Coquitlam school district:
- Mountain View Elementary
- Porter Street Elementary
- Parkland Elementary
- Rochester Elementary
- Riverview Park Elementary

Sports Chanbara is a modern-day sport version of swordplay. Originating in Japan, “Spochan” allows players to conduct combative contests of swordsmanship in a safe, painless manner. Soft, hollow-core, padded swords and a helmet (with faceshield) being the only required equipment, Chanbara teaches focus and respect while increasing coordination and fitness levels.
5 Tenets of Taekwondo
What was once originated as a combative method, the modern-day benefits of Taekwondo are found to touch on every aspect of a student’s life.
For the Student
Students will find their confidence and physical abilities increasing along with their mastery of techniques, drills and concepts. Students can expect to have a more consistent energy throughout the day, with increased focus on important tasks. Humility and respect evolve naturally through repetitive study of the martial art, with the philosophical 5 Tenets of Taekwondo as our guide: Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, and Indomitable Spirit.
For the Child
Lessons which are specifically tailored to each child’s age and skill level help develop physical coordination, flexibility, strength, balance and mental acuity. Our Team’s goal is to increase self-discipline and self-respect, the basic building blocks to the mindset needed to deflect peer-pressure and be confident in their decisions.
For the Adult
Team Performance’s Adult program helps to develop and maintain a strong, balanced body and mind. Classes are the perfect stress-reliever for older students swamped with homework and exams, or for those unwarranted days filled with conflicts at work. Students are encouraged to be selfish in taking time to themselves to train, sweat and smile, working on themselves without a moment to remember the stresses that they brought in with them through the door. Lower stress as you increase strength, energy, physical abilities and confidence.
For the Family
As a Family-focused school, we aim to build strong foundations within our students, so that they can help build and maintain strong ties within their own families. Respect, trust and communication are built through training which promotes values of honesty, respect, loyalty and cooperation.
